Oz done! Now off to Asia for some noodles

25 May 2012

So my Australian leg is now over. I cycled more than 3000 miles in 3 weeks.

I could have done it 4 days quicker if I had a fully functioning back. I still cant seem to push it without putting to much strain on my T11 fracture. It really does hurt like hell but I am determined to push on.

Besides being the most expensive country in the world, Oz has been fun to cycle. The people have been friendly and when you cycle big miles each day you tend to see the same travellers day in and day out. I actually made loads of friends and towards the end people would expect to see me and bring me food and water. They obviously knew how tough The Outback was . . . and they were right. There were a few days where I had only 1 food/water stop in 300miles (450km) I was drinking 10 litres of water a day and the heat and humidity put me on the brink of heatstroke quite a few times. Looking back now I am glad it was tough. It definitely filled my need for adventure. . . . even if I didn't think so at the time.

So now onto Asia. I can't wait. Cheap food and more places to find it. My leg takes me from Singapore to Bangkok. Its only 1000 miles so shouldn't take me more than a week at the most, but that all depends on my health situation. I am getting good rest here before I fly but one big pothole and we are back at square one. I just need to be more careful.

Here is Oz in numbers:

  • 3200 miles cycled
  • 7 punctures (4 of them in 1 morning)
  • 2 rear wheels, 1 front wheel
  • 220kg's of water consumed
  • 1256 dead kangaroos
  • 1986567887656 flies

Thanks to everyone for their continued support. Out of the 9 riders who started there are only 4 left. I am still pushing on no matter what. No injury will stop me from finishing.
